Power Mac G4 Cube - SSD Upgrade Demo (Startech IDE to SATA Adapter)
I got this Power Mac G4 Cube last year from a friend who was relocating overseas. It has sat on my shelf for a good year at least.
More recently with COVID etc. I decided to get some of my old and vintage Macs out of display or storage and set them back up again.
Initially I had planned to upgrade my Graphite iMac G3 DV SE Edition and bought a cheap no name IDE - SATA Adapter, but this did not work. After reading various forum posts it seems that there is a slightly better chance getting G4 Hardware to play nice with SSD's.
I decided to spend a bit more money and buy the Startech version of the IDE to SATA adapter with a red printed circuit board. I can confirm it works inside both a Power Mac G4 Quicksilver 800Mhz and my G4 Cube. It is a bit of an awkward fit inside the Cube though
Performance is fantastic overall, startup is not ridiculously fast as the system must go through some kind of self test for 20 to 30 seconds before the screen lights up.
The next upgrade to this system is replacing the rather slow ATI Rage Pro 128 16MB GPU for a slightly beefier ATI Radeon 7500 series with 32MB VRAM from an old Quicksilver G4 Machine. I have a new I/O shield for the card being 3d printed nicely adapted to fit in the G4's enclosure.
Not an affiliated link, but this is the adapter I used and I can confirm it seems to play nicely with Macs.

The cheaper no name adapters with green PCB's just didn't seem to work for me. I tried one of those in both an iMac G3 and this G4 Cube resulting in erratic behaviour. Crashes, failure to boot etc.

Quick demonstration video of my early 1960s Hacker Cavalier with a Garrard Type 50 Changer Unit. Christmas treat for myself this year and I also made a Chrome stand out of an old 1970s swivel dining chair I think a pretty decent match.

I obtained this tape in a job lot of old Betamax tapes which had been stored outside for many months. Apolgies for the poor quality, but its pretty amazing it still works at all given the atrocious and damp conditions they were all stored in.
Channel 4 - FourScore The Airwaves Orchestra Vinyl (Highest Quality)

Got this 45 the other day and I noticed there is no high quality recording version of this online. This is uploaded under fair use and for nostalgia purposes nothing more. For those who were around during Channel 4's launch back in 1982. As I was born in 1993 I didn't experience the launch myself lol. I recorded the headphone input from my Marantz 2225 Receiver Whilst the record played on my Sa...

Yesterday I went to one of my local charity shops and stumbled across a box full of compact cassette tapes. I picked fourteen of the best including BASF, Memorex and Sonys. In amongst all the albums and compilations was a new old stock TDK SA-C90 Type II Chrome Tape Copyright date 1979. Although the tape wasn’t sealed it was blank, unliked the others and it also feels unused. My assumption is t...

would I be able to use this clip for my das funeral - he designed the means by which the nose went up and down?

🎉🎉🎉🎉
Fabulous. I remember rushing home from work to see the new channel opening up. It was exciting. Today, we wouldn't notice, or even if we did notice, we aren't that interested in new TV channels opening up. In those days, new channels promoted a real identity.
0:10 Channel 4 PH
How much does UA-cam shave off the quality as this sounds bloody lovely! Warm and rich, loads of little details and clarity. Never heard it like this before. What a score! Thanks for uploading! We will miss public service broadcasting when it's gone, brought us gems like this theme and it's channel.
27 anni supersonici!
nah...I'm not crying, it's just that a Concorde got in my eye.
Hi
I’ve heard this but alongside the launch video on Channel 4. I had no idea it was released as a 7” single… The next question is.. where am I going to find myself a copy?!?! Thanks so much for posting. Wonderful to hear this stirring track as it was meant to be heard ❤
ebay, discogs, record shops, charity shops, basically anywhere that people are selling their vinyl... (I got mine I think on ebay about 8 or 9 years ago)
It has a certain production sound to it doesn’t it!
Bloody music is a turn off 🤬🤬🤬
Fantastic
La flecha blanca 🙏👏👏👏👏👏👍
I was around in 1982. I Remember the launch day well. I was watching the station launch at the time. I think I also watched the first Countdown and Brookside programmes. I loved the ident visual and the music. Great opportunity to hear the piece in full. For years before this channel we only had 3 stations; BBC1, BBC2 and ITV. They didn't start normal programming until the mid-afternoon. Prior to that, in the morning, it was the engineer's test card or information films. Good old days. To see a test card just search BBC test card.
When Britain 🇬🇧 and France 🇫🇷 ruled the skies with this special aircraft 🥰
...la calidad de sonido debe ser excelente ...por supuesto, seria mejor tenerlo en casa y reproducirlo con la ayuda de un buen amplificador y bafles de calidad....gracias por el video.
I still miss seeing this beautiful aircraft.😊😊😊
Yaaaaaas
EPIC!
nice job
What a beauty, An absolute technological marvel that has never been surpassed. Please, do it again.
The French were involved in its design and construction also . I worked at Melbourne Tullamarine airport and watched her landing many times . the dropped nose made her stand out from the others 🇮🇪
Most beautiful machine ever designed.
Yes
Footage looks nice
That’s a really good deck there. No discernible wow or flutter, nice and steady. Great stereo image.
Thanks its a Sansui XR-Q7 one of the first computer controlled systems from 1982
I remember the cover of TVTimes. 4 logo in colour on black. I was 6

Concorde
Notre concorde incroyable 🥲
Trop bien ta musique 🎵 Concorde
INOUBLIABLE Notre. CONCORDE. ✈️ ❤️💖🇫🇷🇬🇧🗼🗽🌎🛩️
Nice machine... but using metal tapes rather defeats the cassette vibe ;) You could throw a challenge to a TDK MA by using Dolby C, but a regular Ferric with Dolby B is a very nice challenge for a deck like that.
What did you use to polish
My question too!
I have two bakelites, I’ve never opened them. Do you think there is any risk of asbestos that is my only concern?? Thank you!
Thunderbirds Are Go.
What's the name of the track?
Amazing care in your production work! Infotainment! Thank you.
Please would you upload the other side too? It sounds like you have a much cleaner copy than the version already on UA-cam. Thank you 😊
Goodbye the world's first supersonic aircraft and we will miss never seeing it fly again 😢
Concorde. O avião mais belo que já existiu até hoje.
who composed Fourscore?
David wrote the 4 notes. Rick Wentworth orchestrated it.
P.S. I was the engineer. John Mackswith.
@@johnmackswith5252 I love the casual way you’ve just dropped that in to this thread. What a ‘kin amazing production credit! You must be quite proud to see people enjoying your work 40 years down the line right?!?
Listening to this on the day the privatisation of Channel 4 failed - 4th January 2023.
Awesome video of an aviation legend....thank you for posting.
I got a great rip of it today from my record. Vinyl>Audactity>FLAC
Estos si eran equipos de sonido. Calidad stereo
Beautiful ❤️ I was born in 83, But I remember everything from channel 4's early years with the moving 3d coloured blocks. It's crazy how deep our memories can go back.
Hello. I came across your video while searching for a way to digitize my bands old demo tapes. I have had a DR-05 for several years using it to record rehearsals and live shows etc over the years. Solid little device. How is the quality of what you recorded vis a vis the original?
Hi does the capstan roller turn when the machine is switched on before cassette is inserted? Mine does. Nice deck though
The motor runs on a good 90 percent of cassette decks whilst the device is powered on
Amazing video man, may they rest in peace Concorde, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip
Here's to another 40 years of groundbreaking television, I hope! There's nothing like Channel 4, happy birthday!
